Unveiling the Scientific Secrets of Baseball's Mysterious 'Magic' Mud

A new study published in *Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences* sheds light on the famed 'magic' mud used in Major League Baseball (MLB). **Previously based on anecdotal evidence from players, this unique mud's properties have now been scientifically investigated by researchers from the University of Pennsylvania.** The mud, harvested secretly in South Jersey for generations, is known for making baseballs perform better. **The research employed three sets of experiments** to determine the mud's effectiveness: measuring spreadability, stickiness, and its frictional influence on baseballs.
